Buying a Barbecue Grill – What Are The Choices?

When you are choosing between a gas or charcoal barbecue grill you should consider several factors including how easy it is to light, your budget plus a few other factors. Whatever one you pick you will get just the same tasty results! In this article we’ve put together information to help you make a good choice.

Charcoal BBQ Grills

The simplest and least expensive are charcoal grills as they are just a fireproof bowl, with a food rack and sometimes vents to control the air flow. They can be constructed from cast iron or stainless steel. The simplest to look after are barbecues constructed from stainless steel with a coating of baked enamel which guards against corrosion. Make sure that the wheels are constructed from tough, heavy duty plastic so that they will not become cracked if you leave the barbecue out during very hot or cold spells. It is recommended that the grate for the food is constructed from stainless steel or nickel plate so that it won’t rust and will be easy to clean. Also ensure that the handles are wooden as these will not heat up when in use as metal ones will do. We also like those with a hinged grate as it will make it easier to add more charcoal. Several models have a food surface area but ensure that it has an easy to clean surface and it is not too flimsy.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Charcoal grills are typically much cheaper than natural gas or propane grills and many people prefer their familiar ambiance. They are not so straightforward to light as grills running on propane or natural gas but many people think this adds to the fun of the occasion! The ashes also need to be cleaned out regularly and they are be more expensive to run. However if you will only use it occasionally this won’t be a problem.

Gas BBQ Grills

Gas barbecues can run on either natural gas or propane. Enamel on stainless steel is the best material as it can be left outside and will not rust. Make sure that the legs are sturdy and preferably welded for a long life. It is best to buy a barbecue with two or more burners that are well spaced. Two systems are used on gas barbecues, lava rocks or steel bars. We favor the angled bar system which allows vaporisation of the cooking juices and give the food more flavor. Using lava rocks may cause the juices to collect in the barbecue bottom which may result in a flare up.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Gas barbecues cost more than charcoal barbecue grills but lots of people like them for their convenience. They are very easy to light and temperature control is easy. Gas barbecues are cheaper to operate than charcoal barbecue grills so if you will be using them a lot they will prove cheaper in the long run. They are much cleaner and you won’t have ashes to remove!
